5 Day Direct Access scheme course

There are now three main motorcycle categories plus the moped option.

The following describes a 5 day Direct Access Scheme (DAS) course.

Day 1

C.B.T a mandatory course, typically lasting approximately 6 hours, conducted on a 125cc motorcycle. The course is designed to provide new riders with the essential skills and knowledge required to ride independently on L plates.

Experienced riders are also required to hold a valid C.B.T completion certificate before undertaking the practical motorcycle tests. See our C.B.T information page for details.

C.B.T information

Day 2

The day is dedicated to developing your 'default riding'. Default riding refers to the riding skills and habits you naturally rely on when your attention is divided or you are under pressure.

During the final test, which lasts approximately 40 mins on the public roads, your concentration will be shared between decision-making, test requirements, and managing nerves. This can create distractions. Our training focuses on strengthening your default riding skills so that safe and effective riding becomes second nature, allowing you to focus fully on the tasks required during the test.

Day 3

Once your default riding skills are well established, we will introduce you to the DAS motorcycle. As with the CBT course, the transition from a 125cc motorcycle to a DAS machine begins on our dedicated training area. This allows you to safely develop the low-speed control skills required to successfully complete the Module 1 practical test.

Following this, you will progress onto the road to become familiar with handling the motorcycle at road speeds while further developing your road craft skills. The final two hours of the session are conducted back on the training site, focusing on simulated emergency stops and the hazard avoidance (swerve) manoeuvre. These exercises begin at a controlled speed of approximately 20 mph and are gradually increased to the required 32 mph (50 kph). There is no pressure to reach the minimum speed quickly; progression is paced to suit your confidence and ability.

Day 4

Module 1 Test Day.

There is no Module 1 practical test centre in Chesterfield. As a result, testing is conducted at either Burton Upon Trent, Nottingham, or Rotherham. Each of these test centres is approximately one hour's travel from Clay Cross.

You will ride the motorcycle from Clay Cross to the test centre under the supervision of your instructor. Upon arrival, you will meet the DVSA examiner and complete the Module 1 practical test. If successful, and once the pass certificate has been issued, your instructor will accompany you on further road riding to consolidate your skills before returning to Clay Cross to conclude the day.

Day 5

Module 2 Test Day.

Your final day will be dedicated to refining your road riding skills in and around the test centre area. This may include revisiting specific junctions or road types encountered during previous training sessions to ensure confidence and consistency.

By this stage, you should be fully prepared not only to pass your Module 2 test, but to ride safely and competently beyond it. The day concludes with your Module 2 practical test. Upon successful completion, you will be issued with your pass certificate, marking the end of your training.

What else do I need to know?

While we are able to offer a one-week intensive training schedule, we recommend a more relaxed approach to allow for unforeseen circumstances.

Training sessions and tests may occasionally need to be rescheduled due to weather conditions or other factors.

An intensive one-week course leaves little flexibility for additional practice should it be required. Our preferred approach is to space each of the three tests approximately two or three weeks apart. This structure allows sufficient time for further training if needed and, in the unlikely event of a test failure, enables remaining tests to be rescheduled without the risk of losing test fees.
