A1, A2, AND DAS

At Compass we have our own area to train and practice all the manoeuvres for the Module 1 test.

Our instructors tailor the training to suit your pace and experience level.


The following describes a 5 day Direct Access Scheme (DAS) course.

What to expect

Typical training structure

  • Day 1: CBT - 6 hour day on a 125cc machine
  • Day 2: Module 2 focused road practice
  • Day 3: Module 1 manoeuvre practice
  • Day 4: Module 1 test
  • Day 5: Module 2 test

A1, A2, a licence and DAS training overview

Training content covered

As you progress, your instructor will prepare you for both on-road and off-road test requirements, including:

  • Observations
  • Moving off and pulling over
  • Junctions and roundabouts
  • Bends and cornering techniques
  • Traffic lights and pedestrian crossings
  • Obstructions
  • Hill starts
  • One-way streets
  • Dual carriageways
  • Defensive riding techniques
  • Full Module 1 manoeuvres, including hazard avoidance


For Direct Access Scheme (DAS) candidates, some off-road training is normally completed before starting on-road sessions.

Important notes for learners

  • A solid understanding of road rules is essential for test success.
  • While instructors can teach Highway Code content, this may reduce riding time and increase training costs.
  • Allow sufficient time for practice - progress varies between individuals.

Motorcycle theory requirement

  • You must pass the motorcycle theory and hazard perception test before booking Module 1 and Module 2 practical tests.
  • For progressive access:
    - CBT and theory do not need to be retaken if progressing after 2 years

Module 1 Off-Road Test: What can I expect?

  • Conducted in an off-road manoeuvring area.
  • Duration: approximately 20 minutes.
  • Includes:
    - Wheeling the moped or motorcycle and using the stand
    - Slalom and figure of eight
    - Slow ride
    - U-turn
    - Cornering with controlled stop
    - Cornering and emergency stop
    - Cornering and hazard avoidance


For the hazard avoidance and emergency stop manoeuvres, you must ride at a minimum speed of:

  • 19 mph on a moped
  • 31 mph on a motorcycle

Test results and outcomes - Assessment criteria

The following is the marking system for examiners:

  • Dangerous faults; actual danger caused
  • Serious faults; potentially dangerous actions
  • Riding faults; minor errors

Pass requirements

You must achieve the following to Pass Module 1:

  • No serious or dangerous faults
  • No more than 5 riding faults

If you Pass

  • The examiner will explain any faults
  • You will receive a pass certificate (required for Module 2)

If you do not Pass

  • You must rebook and pay for another Module 1 test
  • Tests must be booked at least 3 working days in advance
  • Module 2 test dates may need to be changed if already booked
