what can i expect on a c.b.t?

What is Compulsory Basic Training?

  • Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) is a mandatory course that most riders must complete before riding a moped or motorcycle on public roads.
  • The purpose of CBT is to ensure you can ride safely and independently while preparing for your full moped or motorcycle licence.
  • CBT is not a test and there is no pass or fail outcome.

What you can ride after completing C.B.T

  • A moped (below 50cc) if you are 16 or over.
  • A motorcycle below 125cc with a maximum power output of 11kW if you are 17 or over
  • You must display L-plates (L or D plates in Wales) at all times.

Validity and legal requirements

  • Your CBT certificate is valid for 2 years.
  • You must pass your full motorcycle or moped test within this period.
  • If your CBT expires, you must either:
    -Retake the CBT, or
    - Stop riding
  • Riding without a valid CBT certificate can result in:
    - A fine of up to £1000
    - Up to 6 penalty points on your licence.

When a C.B.T is not required

You do not need to complete CBT if you:

  • Want to ride a moped (up to 50cc) and passed your car driving test before 1 February 2001
  • Hold a full moped licence obtained by passing a moped test since 1 December 1990 and wish to ride a motorcycle
  • Already hold a full motorcycle licence and are upgrading to another category
  • Live and ride on certain offshore islands
  • Are riding a government backed city rental trial e-scooter

What is involved in Compulsory Basic Training?

CBT consists of five compulsory elements, which must be completed in sequence.

Your instructor will assess your existing knowledge and skills and provide training to address any gaps.

It is sometimes necessary for newer riders to receive further training on an additional day. Our instructors have a duty of care to ensure all riders are competent to ride safely on the public roads.

Training must be revisited within two weeks of the initial C.B.T in order to ensure continuity and understanding.

All elements are listed below and are covered on the course.

Element A - Introduction and Checks

  • Licence and eyesight check (licence must be brought to the course).
  • Glasses or contact lenses must be worn if required for driving.
  • Riders must be able to read a number plate from 20 metres (approximately five parked cars).
  • Introduction to the course structure.
  • Guidance on suitable riding clothing and required safety equipment.
  • Most full car licences also act as a provisional motorcycle licence (status can be checked on GOV.UK link below)

Element B - Motorcycle Controls and Safety

  • Identification and use of all motorcycle controls.
  • Essential daily safety checks.
  • Correct use of the stand.
  • Starting and stopping the engine safely.

Element C - Practical Riding (Off-Road)

Training is delivered through explanations, demonstrations, and supervised practice.
By the end of this element, you should be able to:

  • Move off and stop safely with effective observations
  • Change gears (where applicable)
  • Complete figure-of-eight manoeuvres and U-turns without losing balance
  • Demonstrate observation, signalling, and manoeuvring during simulated left and right turns
  • Perform a simulated emergency stop

Note:

  • Not all riders complete Element C in one day.
  • CBT is not a test; additional training sessions can be arranged to suit your pace.

Element D - Road Safety and Theory

  • Classroom-based session covering rider responsibilities on public roads.
  • Emphasis on understanding the Highway Code.
  • Alternative learning resources are available, including audiobooks and online videos.

Element E - On-Road Assessment

  • A minimum of 2 hours of supervised road riding.
  • The instructor will:
    - Introduce new hazards progressively
    - Stop at safe locations to discuss learning points
    - Provide guidance and corrective coaching where needed
  • Mistakes are treated as learning opportunities, not failures.
  • You must demonstrate consistent, independent riding by the end of this session.
  • Minor errors are acceptable provided they do not compromise safety.
  • Upon successful completion, the CBT certificate will be issued.
