Licence options and age restrictions explained:
Everyone starts with CBT.
To remove L-plates and progress, riders take the theory test and two practical tests. The licence received depends on age.
Below are descriptions of the categories and the restrictions and requirements for each one.

Who: Everyone
Minimum age: 16 (50cc) / 17 (125cc)
Bike size/power: Up to 125cc
Tests needed: None
Key restrictions and benefits: L-plates, no motorway riding, no passengers, valid 2 years
Minimum age: 16
Bike size/power: Up to 50cc
Tests needed: CBT + Theory + Mod 1 & 2
Key restrictions and benefits: No L-plates, passengers allowed
Minimum age: 17
Bike size/power: 125cc / 11kW
Tests needed: CBT + Theory + Mod 1 & 2
Key restrictions and benefits: No L-plates, passengers & motorway riding allowed
Minimum age: 19
Bike size/power: Up ro 35kW
Tests needed: CBT + Theory + Mod 1 & 2
Key restrictions and benefits: Restricted bikes, upgrade after 2 years
Minimum age: 21
Bike size/power: Any size
Tests needed: Mod 1 & 2
Key restrictions and benefits: Must hold A2 for two years
Minimum age: 24
Bike size/power: Any size
Tests needed: CBT + Theory + Mod 1 & 2
Key restrictions and benefits: Full unrestricted licence
